Support from the World Medical Association to Dr. Ayşe Uğurlu and Dr. İlkay Çelik
The World Medical Association has dismissed public officials from their positions in Türkiye for exercising their democratic rights. Dr. Ayşe Uğurlu ve Dr. Ilkay Celik published a message of support for the 5th of June 2025. This draws attention to the fact that silencing doctors is not only a violation of freedom of expression but also of the right to work.
Violation of Democratic Rights
The dismissal of Dr. Uğurlu and Dr. Çelik from their public offices constitutes a serious violation of the Constitution of the Republic of Turkey and international human rights law. The World Medical Association emphasizes that such punishments are extremely concerning because they hinder the right of physicians to express their opinions freely.
Freedom of Expression and Medical Rights
International human rights law guarantees the right of individuals to express their thoughts freely. Turkey has been a party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) since 2003 and is obliged to protect freedom of expression under the provisions of this agreement. In this context, the rights of physicians to defend human rights and provide health services are also guaranteed.
The Role of the Turkish Medical Association
The Turkish Medical Association is making great efforts to defend the rights of its colleagues. The World Medical Association joins the Turkish Medical Association in calling for the immediate lifting of sanctions against Dr. Uğurlu and Dr. Çelik and states that all forms of intimidation and retaliation against healthcare professionals must end. This situation necessitates full respect for the rights of physicians as defenders of health and human dignity.
International Solidarity
The World Medical Association condemns the punishment of physicians like Dr. Uğurlu and Dr. Çelik simply for expressing their opinions. Such practices harm not only individuals but also the health system. The ability of physicians to express their opinions freely is critical to the protection of public health.
Human Rights and Health
Health is one of the most fundamental rights of individuals. The freedom of expression of physicians while providing health services is of vital importance for the functioning of the health system. The World Medical Association states that the violation of these rights negatively affects not only physicians but also society as a whole. Therefore, the protection of human rights is essential for the effective and sustainable provision of health services.
