New Era Started at Eskişehir Göztepe Junction

Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality has implemented significant traffic regulations at Göztepe Junction, one of the busiest and most complex junctions in the city, by implementing a real-time adaptive junction application. Thanks to the extensive physical changes made at the junction, new horizontal and vertical markings, and a smart traffic management system, traffic flow has become much more efficient and fluid.

The Metropolitan Municipality Transportation Department continues its work to breathe new life into urban traffic and reduce traffic congestion with the adaptive intersection application it has implemented at intersections where traffic is heavy, especially during peak hours. Mehmet Osman Sokak was made one-way in order to reduce traffic congestion at the intersection that currently operates with 7 phases. In addition, the pedestrian signaling system was completely renewed and a 5-phase signaling system was introduced. In this way, the signal cycle was shortened and the waiting times of vehicles at red lights were significantly reduced.

The signaling infrastructure of the intersection was also completely renewed and a real-time adaptive control system was put into operation. Supported by cameras, this system instantly detects the vehicle density at the intersection and automatically adjusts the green light durations. Thus, especially during rush hours, drivers wait at red lights less. The measurements revealed that the waiting time at red lights improved by 50%.

These regulations not only save drivers time, but also contribute positively to the environment by reducing fuel consumption. Thanks to vehicles that make fewer stops and starts, carbon emissions are reduced and fuel economy is also achieved.

Transportation Department Director Fırat Bilgili said, “With the Göztepe Junction, the number of real-time adaptive junctions in Eskişehir has reached 23. Our work continues rapidly to put adaptive systems into operation in stages at critical and busy junctions in our city. Our aim is to provide our citizens with a safer, more environmentally friendly and comfortable transportation experience.”
