CAF Signs Train Maintenance Contracts in Two Countries

CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles) has further expanded its strong presence in the global rail services sector by signing two major train maintenance contracts in the United Kingdom and Colombia, worth around €400 million in total. These new agreements are seen as an indication of the Spanish rail manufacturer’s growth strategy in the international market and the trust in its technical expertise.

The first agreement is with Northern Trains, one of the largest passenger train operators serving the North of England region in the UK, and Eversholt Rail, a leading combined transport asset leasing company. Under this long-term agreement, which will run for 10 years, CAF will undertake comprehensive maintenance services for a large fleet of electric and diesel multiple units supplied by Eversholt Rail and operated by Northern Trains between 2018 and 2020.

This important contract covers planned and corrective maintenance, as well as the supply of necessary spare parts and general maintenance of the trains' major equipment. The maintenance services include a total of 12 trains, including 31 four-car and 25 three-car electric trains, as well as 33 two-car and 101 three-car diesel units.

CAF has a strong industrial base in the UK. The company employs around 14 people at its modern production facility in Newport and 1.000 strategic service depots across the country. This new contract further strengthens CAF’s market position in the UK and reinforces its presence in the country’s service segment. The agreement also demonstrates the growing demand for CAF’s innovative technical solutions and confirms the company’s role as a long-term and reliable partner in the British rail sector.

The second important contract was signed with Medellín Metro, the metro operator of Medellín, one of the major metropolises of Colombia, South America. This agreement covers 2009 three-car metro trains supplied by CAF since 38. According to the terms of the contract, 25 of these trains will undergo a major renovation process, while the remaining 13 trains will be included in a medium-term renovation program.

This new maintenance contract complements the existing agreements signed with Medellín Metro in late 2024, which include the supply of 13 new trains and the upgrade of the entire existing fleet of 80 trains with modern TCMS (Train Control and Monitoring Systems). This significantly expands CAF’s service portfolio in the Colombian market.

CAF’s global success in the rail services sector is evident in the more than 20 service contracts it currently manages in 150 different countries, with more than 4.000 experienced professionals working on these contracts. This consistent global growth and the strong trust customers place in CAF’s expertise reinforce the company’s leading position in the sector.
