Excavation work continues at the Mürselpaşa Highway Underpass, one of the important transportation projects initiated by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay to relieve city traffic. The underpass, which will connect the Food Bazaar to Mürselpaşa Boulevard under the railway line, will ease traffic in Halkapınar and make transportation to the city center easier.
Excavation work has begun on the Mürselpaşa Highway Underpass, the first phase of the major transportation projects initiated by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay to resolve the traffic congestion in the heart of Izmir. The Mürselpaşa Highway Underpass will ease transportation in the Halkapınar region, where the city's population density has increased with its hospital and new residential areas. With the highway underpass, an alternative transportation route will be created that will provide a direct connection from Mürselpaşa Boulevard to the Food Bazaar, one of the city's important trade centers. The interruption between the two neighborhoods due to the railway line will be eliminated. The underpass, which will connect Mürselpaşa Boulevard in the Halkapınar Neighborhood to the Food Bazaar, will be 430 meters long and 35 meters wide. The underpass, which will pass under the railway and metro line, will serve as 2 lanes for arrival and 2 lanes for departure. Thanks to the underpass, the density created by TIRs and loaded trucks in the city center in particular will be eliminated. The alternative route will prevent the congestion of vehicles traveling from Alsancak to the Food Market on Şehitler Street, Halkapınar Junction and Gaziler Street. Transportation to the city center will be easier. Traffic congestion will decrease on Mürselpaşa Boulevard, one of the most congested points in Izmir. The work, which will cost 500 million liras, is planned to be completed in December of this year with teams working 7/24.
“Our transportation investments continue”
Providing information about the works, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Technical Works Department Road Superstructure Branch Manager Nedim Ersin Külekçi said, “Our reinforced concrete retaining wall manufacturing continues underground in the Pakistan Boulevard area in the Food Bazaar. We plan to create an uninterrupted and comfortable transportation network between the Food Bazaar and Alsancak. This project will seriously relieve the traffic in the region. It will make transportation more comfortable and more reliable. When we complete the planned investments with the Mürselpaşa Underpass, the Alsancak traffic will be greatly relieved. The first of our Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay’s transportation network projects is the Mürselpaşa Underpass. New routes will be created as a continuation of this underpass. We will continue transportation investments in İzmir without slowing down.”
Alternative route to Alsancak
The Izmir Metropolitan Municipality aims to complete the transportation projects it has initiated to find a permanent solution to the traffic problem experienced in the city center and create an alternative transportation route to Alsancak. Following the Mürselpaşa Highway Underpass, which is the first of the prepared projects, the Food Market and Alsancak will be connected to each other via Ege Neighborhood with the Ege Neighborhood Intersection and Meles Stream Bridge (K20 Bridge) projects. Thus, the traffic density on Atatürk Street, Şair Eşref Boulevard, Talatpaşa Boulevard and Cumhuriyet Boulevard at the entrances and exits to Alsancak will be reduced.
