In a significant step towards energy efficiency and environmentally friendly practices, Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) will receive 10 ES3000 battery-powered locomotives from Bulgaria-based manufacturer Express Service OOD in the next two years. This is the largest contract for the Bulgarian company in the field of shunting traction equipment.
Investing in the Future in a War Environment: Energy Efficiency and Modernization Priority
The first contacts between Ukrzaliznytsia and Express Service OOD took place during the first weeks of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, at a critical time when Ukrainian railways were looking for ways to develop their fleet. Despite the ongoing war, the company’s management demonstrated a long-term strategic vision, focusing on energy efficiency, modernization and environmental safety. This determination stands out as a strong demonstration of faith in Ukraine’s future and commitment to a sustainable transport system.
Diesel to Battery Transition Strategy: A Smart Move for the Environment and the Economy
The main motivation behind this significant transformation was the decision to phase out old Soviet-made diesel locomotives, which were fuel-intensive and caused serious environmental damage. Ukrzaliznytsia therefore chose to invest in modern and environmentally friendly technologies that comply with European Union (EU) standards and for this purpose it obtained financing from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). This financial support has given significant impetus to Ukraine’s efforts to modernize its railway infrastructure and reduce its environmental impact.
Bulgarian Technology at the Top of International Bidding
The international tender for this important supply by Ukrzaliznytsia also included bidders from leading countries in the field of railway technology, such as Germany, Poland and the United States. However, after detailed evaluations, the technology offered by Express Service OOD from Bulgaria was determined to be the most suitable solution for the needs of Ukrainian railways. This choice once again proved the international competitiveness and technological competence of the Bulgarian railway industry.
Ukrainian Technicians Prepare for New Generation Locomotives
The first two ES3000 battery-powered locomotives are expected to be delivered to Ukraine approximately two months after the contract is signed. Following this first delivery, Ukrzaliznytsia’s maintenance personnel are scheduled to begin a comprehensive training program on the use and maintenance of the new equipment. With the battery-powered locomotives entering service, energy savings will be achieved from day one, while emissions from diesel locomotives will also be gradually reduced. The new locomotives are specifically designed to meet the 1520 mm track gauge, which is critical for Ukraine’s extensive railway network. This will allow the locomotives to seamlessly integrate into the existing infrastructure.
Express Service OOD: Your Reliable Partner for Shunting Locomotives
Express Service OOD, founded in Ruse, Bulgaria, is a leading company specializing in the production of battery and diesel shunting locomotives, as well as providing comprehensive repair and maintenance services for railway vehicles. Since its establishment, the company has established itself as a reliable partner for industrial enterprises, railway operators and logistics terminals around the world. This large-scale agreement with Ukrzaliznytsia will further increase Express Service OOD’s reputation and growth potential in the international market. This strategic choice of Ukraine can also serve as an inspiring example for other countries to move towards sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions in railway transport.
