Scheduled to be completed between 2030 and 2034, the ambitious project will bring brand new towers, spacious plazas, and uninterrupted pedestrian access to the area. The transformation aims to transform Shibuya from a mere transportation hub into a modern urban living space.
Seamless Pedestrian Network and New Squares to Unite Shibuya
One of the most striking elements of the project is the multi-level pedestrian system, which is targeted to be completed by 2030. This innovative network will seamlessly connect Shibuya Station to all surrounding areas, significantly easing the flow of people and improving accessibility in Tokyo’s vibrant city center. Public space improvements will continue gradually until 2034. As a result of these works, five new plazas totaling 20.000 square meters will be added to Shibuya. These spacious squares will not only serve as modern meeting points, but also as safe evacuation zones in case of emergencies. This multi-purpose design concept aims to increase the functionality of the urban area.
Shibuya Scramble Square Expands: New Center for Commerce and Culture
The Shibuya Scramble Square complex, which has become one of Shibuya’s iconic landmarks, is also a key part of this redevelopment project. The East tower, which opened in 2019, will be joined by the Center and West buildings in 2031. With these new additions, each floor of the complex will offer approximately 6.000 square meters of retail space, making it one of Tokyo’s largest and most attractive commercial centers. Filled with world-famous brand stores, stylish boutiques, and a variety of restaurants, the area will create a new attraction for shoppers.
On the 10th floor of the central tower, a remarkable cultural venue will be realized. This new cultural pavilion, which will be realized in cooperation with embassies, will offer visitors a unique view of both Shinjuku's impressive skyline and Shibuya Scramble Crossing, one of the world's most famous pedestrian crossings. This cultural spot aims to add artistic and social vitality to the area.
Daily Operations Will Not Be Interrupted, Security Is at the Forefront
While this massive construction work is ongoing, the developers are taking great care to ensure that daily station operations are not disrupted. Safety is given top priority, while regular tours and information updates are provided to keep both passengers and residents informed about the project.
