Safe Bicycle Lanes Project for Students in Konya

Thanks to the “Safe School Routes Project” implemented by Konya Metropolitan Municipality, students can safely travel to school in the bicycle city of Konya. In addition to encouraging students to use bicycles, the project also contributes to the development of healthy generations by allowing them to travel in a safe traffic environment.

Konya's Leadership in Bicycle Transportation

Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay emphasized Konya’s pioneering position in bicycle transportation in his statements. Reminding that the city has the longest bicycle path in Türkiye with its 655-kilometer bicycle path network, Mayor Altay stated that one of his top priorities is for children to use this infrastructure safely. He expressed his satisfaction with the expansion of the project by saying, “With the Safe School Paths project, our children can now safely reach their schools by bicycle. We are working to ensure that the project reaches more schools and students. With the schools included this year, the number of schools in our project has increased to 34.”

Purpose: To Popularize Bicycle Use

President Altay stated that they aim to have individuals of all ages in Konya prefer bicycles more in their daily lives. President Altay emphasized that especially children getting used to bicycle transportation at an early age makes a significant contribution to the growth of healthy generations, and said, “This is why we attach great importance to the Safe School Routes Project and will continue to include more schools in this project every year.”

Students participating in the project also expressed their satisfaction with the mass bicycle ride event and thanked Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay for the “Safe School Routes Project”.

Theoretical and Practical Trainings

Students from Ahmet Tevfik İleri Imam Hatip Secondary School, Prof. Dr. Mahmut Esat Coşan Imam Hatip Secondary School and Mehmet-Kadir Özgüzar Secondary School, who were included in the project carried out in cooperation with Konya Provincial Directorate of National Education, first received theoretical training on the benefits of cycling, bicycle riding equipment and safe bicycle use. Then, they reinforced what they learned by practicing safe bicycle riding accompanied by motorized police teams.

New Schools Included in the Project

The schools that have recently joined the “Safe School Routes Project” are: Hoca Ahmet Yesevi Middle School, Ahmet Tevfik İleri Imam Hatip Middle School, Ulubatlı Hasan Imam Hatip Middle School, Namık Kemal Middle School, Adnan Hadiye Sürmegöz Middle School, Mehmet-Kadir Özgüzar Middle School, Ticaret Borsası Middle School, Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Middle School and Prof. Dr. Mahmut Esat Coşan Imam Hatip Middle School. With the participation of these schools in the project, more students in Konya have the opportunity to safely travel to school by bike.
