Mersin's Historic Stone Building Revives as City Museum

In line with the vision of protecting the city's rich history and cultural values, Mersin Metropolitan Municipality continues its restoration work to bring the Stone Building to Mersin as a 'City Museum'. The restoration work, which is carried out meticulously under the coordination of the Metropolitan Municipality Department of Technical Services, prioritizes preserving the original architecture and historical character of the building.

The Stone Building Will Be the New Address of Culture and Art

Once the project is complete, the historical Taş Bina will be revived and transformed into a City Museum that will host Mersin’s cultural and artistic activities, host various exhibitions and events that will keep the city’s memory alive. The Taş Bina, which has been used for various purposes since the 1900s such as a salt depot, horseshoe and nail factory, Ak Kahve and the City Hall, will continue to be an important part of Mersin’s cultural memory by preserving its historical texture when the restoration process is complete.

Information About the Restoration Process from Civil Engineer Boğa

Civil Engineer İrfan Boğa, who works at the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Department of Technical Services, provided detailed information about the restoration work. Boğa said, “We started the restoration work of the Stone Building, which was used as the Municipality Service Building for many years, on March 1, 2024. First, we completed the dismantling of the additions made to the building later. Then, we carried out the ground reinforcement manufacturing. The dismantling of the existing roof was completed and we started the manufacturing process for the new roof. Currently, the existing reinforcement and restoration work of the building's stone walls are ongoing. At the end of the restoration process, we will provide a beautiful City Museum that reflects the cultural values of our city, befitting Mersin, without damaging the historical texture of the building at all.” With these meticulous works, Mersin will achieve an important gain that protects its historical identity and carries its cultural heritage to the future.
