Landings Are Now Safer at Rize-Artvin Airport

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that they have completed the installation of the second instrument landing system (ILS), which will facilitate landing of aircraft in difficult weather conditions at Rize-Artvin Airport. Minister Uraloğlu said, “The system, whose flight controls we carried out on April 19, 2025, successfully passed all tests. It will be actively used after being included in the aviation information publication in June.”

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the technical infrastructure at Rize-Artvin Airport, which was built on the sea embankment and has made a significant contribution to the region since it was opened on May 14, 2022, has been further strengthened.

ILS Passed All Tests Successfully

Uraloğlu stated that Rize-Artvin Airport is located in a region where the cloud ceiling is low, fog and heavy rain are common, and said, “We have completed the installation of the second ILS system, which will provide ease of landing for aircraft in difficult weather conditions. The system, whose flight controls we carried out on April 19, 2025, successfully passed all tests. It will be actively used after we include it in the aviation information publication (AIP) in June.”

ILS will provide the pilot with heading and glide path information

Minister Uraloğlu, who stated that the system enables the aircraft to approach the runway at a low altitude and to land safely on the runway with electronic devices, especially in weather conditions where visibility is poor, stated that the pilot is provided with direction and glide path information with ILS. Uraloğlu said, “Since Rize Artvin Airport is geographically located in a region where the cloud ceiling is low and there is fog and heavy rain, the system in question will provide great benefits in aircraft landings.”

CAT II Lighting System in Operation

Uraloğlu reminded that the installation and tests of the CAT II lighting system were also successfully completed and said, “The CAT II lighting system is currently active. This system increases landing safety, especially in weather conditions where visibility is limited.”

Approximately 3 Million Passengers in 3 Years

Minister Uraloğlu stated that Rize-Artvin Airport is the second airport in Türkiye and the fifth in the world built on the sea. Uraloğlu also stated that it is an important project that will serve the local people, tourism and trade for many years with its infrastructure, transportation capability and architectural identity, and said, “Our airport, which was used by 2024 million 1 thousand 97 people in 828, has served a total of approximately 3 million passengers since the day it was opened.”

“Our Airport is One of the Symbolic Structures of the Region”

Emphasizing that the airport built on 100 million tons of sea fill in Rize Pazar has a 3-meter-long and 45-meter-wide runway and an apron with a capacity for 7 aircraft, Uraloğlu said, “Our airport is not only a transportation point but also one of the symbolic structures of the region with its tea glass-themed Air Traffic Control Tower, the Tea Museum in the terminal building and the Black Sea architecture.”
