KiwiRail has revamped its new service in Dunedin, New Zealand Hillside Workshops has officially reopened, taking a significant step towards modernising rail services in the South Island and supporting regional growth. The development was reported by rail transport news portal Railway Supply.
Revitalized Workshops Bring Jobs and Innovation
Reanimated 5.500 square meter facility, which allows crews to service multiple locomotives and wagons at the same time 21 workstations The original 19th century buildings have been preserved and reinforced for safe parts storage, ensuring the historic fabric is preserved whilst meeting modern working standards.
The new infrastructure also includes modern office space and facilities for Dunedin’s track and mechanical teams. For the first time, all departments now operate under one roof, significantly improving coordination and efficiency. KiwiRail CEO Peter Reidy highlighted the importance of the facility to the community. According to Reidy, many local families have ties to the workshop and its transformation signals a new era for regional rail.
KiwiRail Investment Supports Growth in South Island
Government investment played a significant role in this project. In 2019, the Provincial Growth Fund received $20 million grant, taken from the 2021 Budget 85 million dollars and broader fleet upgrades 23 million dollars, helped bring Hillside back to life. This funding shows how important the project is not only for rail infrastructure but also for regional development.
Wagon assembly began in March 2024. The addition of apprentices and new skills strengthens our long-term capabilities,” Reidy said.
