Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has taken an important step in line with its corporate social responsibility approach and business goals. The company has signed a five-year philanthropic partnership with Université de Sherbrooke, one of Canada’s prestigious educational institutions, to support knowledge sharing, education, experiential learning, student engagement, and teaching, research and development activities.
“Today, more than ever, our rail mobility professions need cutting-edge expertise and highly skilled resources across a range of technological fields. We are delighted to invest in our community and support the talented Sherbrooke students who will become tomorrow’s engineers, scientists, lawyers and executives,” said Michael Keroullé, President, Alstom Americas.
This meaningful support is part of Université de Sherbrooke’s major campaign “Choosing to Change the Future” 250.000 Canadian Dollars will take the form of a donation of 100,000 TL and will be spread across several important initiatives:
- Scientific Content and Awareness Creation: The production of scientific content that can reach a wide audience, activities aimed at raising and mobilizing awareness, especially on climate change, and the creation of a special section for young people will be supported.
- Contribution to Education and Research Activities: Funding will be provided for teaching and research projects, design projects, various student initiatives, educational and scientific events, as well as activities such as the “Createk” Competition, lunchtime classes and student guidance programs.
- Encouraging Women's Participation in Engineering and Law: Support will be provided to the “Génie au féminin” scholarship program, which aims to attract female students to career paths in engineering and law.
- Industry Introduction and Career Opportunities: Activities will be carried out in the Faculty of Engineering and at various locations around the campus to promote Alstom as a local employer and to provide students with information about career opportunities in the rail industry, the sector of the future.
This new partnership will join Alstom’s strategic collaborations with other local higher education institutions, further strengthening the company’s presence in the Quebec and Canadian innovation ecosystem. The university’s initiatives, particularly through its Centre de technologies avancées de Sherbrooke and laboratories, foster entrepreneurship and the development of Quebec-based companies, adding a tangible dimension to experiential learning.
“Today, more than ever, our rail mobility professions need cutting-edge expertise and highly skilled resources across a range of technological fields. We look to institutions like Université de Sherbrooke to produce graduates who know how to meet our challenges,” said Michael Keroullé, President of Alstom Americas. Alstom employs more than 1.000 engineers in Canada, many of whom work in Montérégie, Quebec, where Université de Sherbrooke has a campus. Keroullé noted that many Université de Sherbrooke graduates hold senior positions at Alstom, a testament to the high quality of education the university provides.
Professor Jean Proulx, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Université de Sherbrooke, said: “On behalf of my fellow deans of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Faculty of Law, I would like to thank Alstom for this generous gesture, which demonstrates our deep commitment to educating the next generation of students and to university research. Thanks to this support, our students will be able to develop their full potential in even more stimulating and innovative environments. We are very grateful to be able to rely on a partner who is so committed to our mission.”
Employing more than 5.000 people across Canada and headquartered in the Americas in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Quebec, Alstom stands out as a proud Canadian player, with facilities in Brampton, Kingston and Thunder Bay in Ontario, and a presence in La Pocatière and St-Bruno in Quebec, making it the only manufacturer with an industrial footprint in Canada.
