The Ministry of Industry and Technology announced an important development for the Turkish automotive industry: Chery, one of China's leading automobile brands, has decided to establish a production facility in Türkiye. According to the statement made by the ministry, this strategic investment will be implemented in Samsun and the annual production capacity of the factory will be 200 thousand vehicles.
Samsun is a Candidate to Become an Automotive Production Base
Speaking at the Climate and Economy Sustainable Mobility Vehicles and Technologies Summit, Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır drew attention to the strong production and innovation potential in Türkiye's mobility ecosystem. Stating that electric vehicle sales increased by 103 percent and hybrid vehicle sales by 134 percent in the first four months of the year in Türkiye compared to the previous year, Minister Kacır stated that the share of electric vehicles in the total market increased to 15,5 percent and the share of hybrid vehicles to 29 percent in the same period. Emphasizing that this rapid transformation attracted the attention of international investors, Kacır said that Türkiye has become an attractive center for mobility investments.
Chery Investment Will Contribute to Türkiye's Mobility Transformation
The Chery production facility to be established in Türkiye is an important link in the chain of strategic investments that not only support the brand's growth targets but also the mobility transformation across the country. In line with the Mobility Vehicle and Technology Strategies Roadmap announced by the Ministry of Industry and Technology, such investments aim to increase Türkiye's production capacity and increase the localization rate.
Big Goals: Production of 2030 Million Electric Vehicles by 1
Türkiye has ambitious goals such as producing 2030 million electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles annually by 1 and increasing the localization rate in these vehicles to 75 percent. The new Chery production facility to be established in Samsun is expected to provide significant contributions to both employment creation and regional industrial development.
A New Link in the Electric Vehicle Production Chain
With this significant investment by Chinese automotive giant Chery, a new and strong link will be added to the electric vehicle production chain in Türkiye. It is also stated that this investment is directly compatible with Türkiye's domestic battery production goals, expansion of fast charging infrastructure and plans for smart mobility systems.
Türkiye is Growing Stronger on the Global Mobility Stage
Turkey is gradually increasing its influence on the global mobility scene with giants such as the domestic car brand Togg and another major Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, BYD, which has decided to invest in Manisa. Chery’s production facility with an annual capacity of 200 vehicles to be established in Samsun is also considered one of the newest and strongest steps of this process.
As emphasized by Minister Kacır in his statements, such investments reinforce the trust in Türkiye’s high-tech production capacity and the interest of investors in the country. While Turkey is advancing with increasing momentum in the production of new generation electric vehicles, it aims to increase the market share of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to over 2030 percent, the localization rate in these vehicles to 35 percent and the production capacity to 75 million by 1 with the multi-dimensional steps taken. In addition, plans include making Türkiye a regional battery production center with battery module and sub-component investments and producing Level 2030 domestic autonomous vehicles by 3. Chery’s major investment in Samsun will play an important role in Türkiye achieving these ambitious goals.
