EMR's Modernized Trains in Service

East Midlands Railway (EMR) has rolled out its first refurbished Series 2025 diesel train to passengers by April 170. Encompassing 44 trains in total, the comprehensive modernisation project aims to significantly improve the journey experience.

Increased Comfort with a £23 Million Investment

The project, which was implemented with a total budget of £23 million, includes a series of innovations that prioritize passenger comfort in the interior and exterior design of the trains. As part of the work carried out, modern surveillance systems were installed on the trains, while USB and electrical outlets were integrated into the seats so that passengers could charge their electronic devices. In addition, the seats, toilets, passenger tables and interior upholstery were completely renewed, making them more comfortable and aesthetic. There is also good news for cycling enthusiasts; the renewed trains will also feature specially designated bicycle areas.

Design by Derby, Implementation by Stage

The modern and stylish design of the updated trains was implemented by Derby-based firm DGDESIGN. Following the first modernised train, EMR plans to put the second train into service in May 2025. Modernisation work on the remaining trains will continue on a monthly basis. These refurbished trains will serve passengers on various routes in the East Midlands and South Yorkshire regions.

Part of Comprehensive Modernization Program

The modernisation of the Series 170 diesel trains is a key part of EMR’s wider modernisation programme. The £60 million investment programme also includes a similar upgrade of the Series 360 electric trains and the Series 158 diesel trains. EMR’s large-scale project is focused on significantly improving the quality of service and comfort for passengers. Once complete, all of the refurbished trains will meet modern standards of comfort and safety, and will provide a more enjoyable experience, particularly on long-distance journeys.

Contribution to Infrastructure Development

The upgrade of the 170 Series trains also contributes to the overall improvement of the UK’s transport infrastructure. EMR expects that these modernisations will increase the appeal of regional travel and improve the quality of service, particularly on heavily used routes. This is expected to make rail a more attractive and preferred option for local people.
