
The Trabzon Rail Transportation System Project, which will shape the city's transportation future, was announced to the public at the introductory meeting hosted by Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ahmet Metin Genç. The details of the project were shared at the meeting, which was also attended by Yalçın Eyigün, General Manager of Infrastructure Investments of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, and it was announced that the first excavation would be done before the end of the year by including it in the 2026 investment program.
President Genç: “We are implementing our promise step by step”
President Ahmet Metin Genç expressed his satisfaction at the introduction meeting of the rail system project, one of his most important promises during the election period. Stating that they determined this project as their top priority in order to increase the transportation standards of Trabzon, provide comfortable transportation and encourage public transportation, Genç said, “I made a commitment by saying that I would follow this work month by month, day by day and hour by hour. Thank God, today we are proud to implement this promise step by step.” Stating that the project received approval from the Presidency Strategy and Budget Presidency and the implementation project tender was held, Genç emphasized that they consulted with civil society organizations and professional chambers with a participatory approach.
32 Kilometer Line, Metro Characteristics
Mayor Genç announced that the rail system project was planned to connect the districts of Akçaabat, Ortahisar and Yomra on a 32-kilometer line. He said that the starting point of the project would be the city hospital and stadium area in Akyazı, and from there it would proceed via the Meydan, bus station, KTÜ and airport route, reaching Akçaabat and Yomra. He stated that the support of Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu was very valuable in the implementation of the project.
Governor Yıldırım: “There Should Be a Metro in Trabzon Too”
Trabzon Governor Aziz Yıldırım stated that despite the difficult geographical structure of Trabzon, an important engineering success was achieved and thanked everyone who contributed to the project, especially the President. Yıldırım emphasized that if there is a metro in Istanbul and Ankara, Trabzon should have one as well, and said that this system will facilitate urban transportation, ease traffic and make public transportation more comfortable.
General Manager Eyigün: “We Developed a Formula Specific to Trabzon”
Yalçın Eyigün, General Manager of Infrastructure Investments of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, announced that the project, which was started with the name of tram due to the unique geographical structure of Trabzon, was transformed into metro characteristics due to the land conditions. Eyigün, who stated that they were working to develop the most suitable rail system model for the city due to the existence of the coastal road but the settlement areas being on the hills, said that they aimed for a fully signalized, fully automatic and high average speed system. He noted that the first stage was the 16-kilometer middle section starting from Akyazı and reaching the center, airport and terminal, and that there would be 16 stops on this line. He announced that drilling work was ongoing and that the project would be completed by the end of the year and included in the 2026 investment program.
