UK's First Upgraded Class 376 Train Enters Service

Major UK train operator Southeastern has launched its first upgraded Class 376 train into passenger service, marking the start of a major fleet renewal programme. The new milestone includes innovations such as a stylish design and improved lighting, promising passengers a more modern and comfortable travel experience.

Southeastern’s Fleet Renewal Begins with Class 376

The first unit to be refurbished, 376027, has been implemented as part of a comprehensive modernization program for the Class 376 Electrostar fleet. Southeastern has completed the first phase of upgrades, adding a blue livery to the exterior of the trains and energy-efficient LED lighting. But this is just the beginning of the planned improvements.

The full-scale renovations will offer features that will significantly improve the passenger travel experience. This includes adding seat-top power outlets and USB charging ports, allowing passengers to use their electronic devices more comfortably. Additionally, each train will feature completely renovated, more comfortable seats. The first fully upgraded unit is expected to enter service by the end of 2025. Southeastern’s investment in these energy-saving features aims to make the passenger environment more comfortable and modern.

Emphasis on Collaboration in Renewal Work

Alstom and Eversholt Rail are key partners in the ongoing modernisation of the Southeastern fleet. Alstom provides the expertise and materials needed to install new seats and electrical outlets, ensuring that each train offers a comfortable and modern experience for passengers.

“We are proud to celebrate this significant milestone,” said Mark Johnson, Southeastern’s Director of Engineering. “Customers will be delighted with the new design and brighter, more energy-efficient interior. The complete upgrade, including outlets and new seating, will make a real difference,” Johnson said.

Comprehensive Fleet Improvement Work Continues

In addition to the upgrades to its Class 376 trains, Southeastern continues to invest in other fleet improvements, including a £395 million renewal programme of its Class 27 ‘Javelin’ fleet, the UK’s only domestic high-speed rail service. In addition, 13 new Class 707 trains are being transferred to improve service across South East London and Kent, and work is underway to upgrade the existing Class 375 fleet.

All of these upgrades are part of a broader strategy to improve the overall customer experience on Southeastern’s services, aiming to provide passengers with a more comfortable, modern and energy-efficient journey.
