Supermassive Games, which has earned a unique place in the gaming world with its cinematic narrative and suspenseful stories, has been revealed to have a new Blade Runner-themed project that it has been carrying out in secret for a long time. However, according to the information that came to light as a result of Insider Gaming's courageous investigation, this ambitious production called "Blade Runner: Time To Live" was quietly canceled towards the end of last year. The project, which was designed as an action-adventure game with deep character and set in the dystopian atmosphere of 2065, was shelved despite its high budget and remarkable storyline, creating surprise and disappointment among gamers.
The Dark Details of Blade Runner: Time To Live
“Blade Runner: Time To Live” was designed as an action-adventure game played from a third-person perspective, aiming to drag players into the dark and dangerous underworld of New Zurich in the year 2065, where they will breathe in the iconic atmosphere of the Blade Runner universe. Players will take on the role of the mysterious So-Lange character, a fugitive Nexus-6 model whose lifespan should have long expired, and will both fight a relentless struggle for survival and undertake the critical mission of “retiring” a dangerous rebel leader. The game’s gripping story was planned to skillfully blend elements such as betrayal, uncovering secrets, in-depth investigations and breathtaking conflicts.
The game's core gameplay mechanics were built on four main pillars: stealth, requiring careful movement, adrenaline-filled close-quarters combat, high-paced gunfights, detailed and impressive environment exploration, and dramatic dialogue shaped by the player's decisions. In addition, the use of mysterious memories from the character's past, complex investigations with technological tools, and character development shaped by the player's choices were expected to add depth and replayability to the gameplay. The experienced development team at the head of the project had previously played important roles in Supermassive Games' acclaimed production The Quarry. The game's pre-production process began in 2024, and the prototype phase was targeted to be completed by September 2025 with an ambitious schedule.
It was stated that a significant budget of approximately $45 million was allocated for the project’s implementation, and that $9 million of this budget would be spent on outsourced performance capture (motion capture) technologies and a talented cast. However, this budget did not include the costs of original game music, voice actor royalties, extensive testing processes, and potential DLC (downloadable content) packs. This meant that the total cost of the project could increase significantly over time.
While no official reason has been shared directly by Supermassive Games or the publishers regarding the unexpected cancellation of the game, reliable sources close to the project claim that this regrettable decision was made by Alcon Entertainment, the owner of the intellectual property rights to Blade Runner. Sources known to be close to the project describe “Blade Runner: Time To Live” as an “extremely impressive” production, while neither Supermassive Games nor Alcon Entertainment have refrained from making any official statements on the matter at this stage.
Although the quiet cancellation of another potential game set in the Blade Runner universe has caused deep sadness among the series' loyal fans, it seems that these striking details leaked about the project will continue to be talked about in the gaming world for a long time. If another ambitious production set in the Blade Runner universe is announced in the future, the possibility of some traces of this canceled "Blade Runner: Time To Live" project reappearing in that game should not be ignored.
