Sofia, $53 Million Tram Tender Launched

The Bulgarian capital Sofia has taken an important step towards modernising the city’s public transport infrastructure and improving passenger comfort. The municipal company “Stolichen Electrotransport” has launched an international tender to purchase 53 low-floor trams worth $18 million, to be delivered within the next three years.

The tender covers 1435 modern, low-floor trams specially designed for 18 mm standard gauge rails. The contract, which has a budget of approximately $53 million excluding Value Added Tax (VAT), is planned to be completed within three years after its signing.

Sofia Modernizes Tram Fleet

Sofia Municipality has long invested in modernising its tram fleet, with the aim of improving the quality of public transport services in the city and creating an environmentally friendly transport network. This new tender is an important part of this strategic goal.

The new trams that are put out to tender are required to have an articulated structure and comply with current standards such as energy efficiency, passenger accessibility and high capacity. In order to maximize passenger comfort, features such as modern climate control systems and reduced interior noise levels are also included in the tender specifications.

Sofia Municipality has experience in renewing its tram fleet. Previously, 14 five-section low-floor trams were delivered in cooperation with the Polish manufacturer Pesa. The successful performance of these vehicles in daily operations and the positive feedback received from passengers were influential in Sofia’s decision to invest in modern trams.

Open Tender Process for International Manufacturers

Sofia Municipality is carrying out this important tender process at an international level, adopting the principles of transparency and competition in public procurement. As a result, the participation of the world's leading tram manufacturers is expected.

Applications for the tender will be accepted in the coming weeks. The winning manufacturer will be determined after a meticulous evaluation process, taking into account various criteria such as technical specifications, price offers and warranty conditions. This competitive process will ensure that Sofia receives the most modern trams at the most favorable conditions.

Contribution to the Environment and Quality of Life

Sofia city authorities stress that renewing the tram fleet is an important element of a broader strategy to improve the city’s environmental conditions and improve the quality of public transport services. The new low-floor trams are expected to have lower emissions than existing vehicles, thus contributing positively to Sofia’s air quality.

In addition, with the introduction of modern and comfortable trams, Sofia’s transport network will become more attractive for both residents and visitors. The low-floor design with accessibility features will make public transport more comfortable for the elderly, disabled people and passengers with strollers. High-capacity and comfortable interiors will significantly improve the travel experience.

As a result, the $53 million tram tender launched by the Sofia Municipality is considered an important milestone in the city's public transport system. With the entry into service of modern and environmentally friendly trams, Sofia's transport infrastructure will be strengthened, air quality will improve and the quality of life of the city's residents will increase. This investment stands out as a concrete step towards Sofia's vision of becoming a sustainable and modern city for the future.
