Safe and Efficient Communication Network from Kontron to Spanish Railways

As modernization efforts in Europe’s rail networks continue apace, technology giant Kontron is launching a major project that will transform the communications infrastructure of a major railway line in Spain. Under this strategic contract worth over €20 million with national rail infrastructure operator Adif, Kontron Transportation Spain will equip the Medina del Campo – Ourense line, which runs through the north-west of the country, with a state-of-the-art GSM-R (Global Mobile Communications System for Railways) radio communications network.

This important railway line, which is 338 kilometres long in total, supports both regional passenger transport and heavy freight traffic in the northwestern region of Spain. Kontron’s new generation GSM-R technology will significantly increase the safety of railway operations, while also increasing the line’s current capacity and ultimately improving the overall quality of transport services provided. This extensive investment in digital infrastructure represents a critical milestone in Spain’s railway modernisation process.

Additional Investment to Strengthen Infrastructure

In order to support this important project by Kontron and to further strengthen the railway’s communications infrastructure, Adif plans to make an additional investment of 30 million euros. This additional investment includes a comprehensive upgrade of the line’s existing telecommunications system. The project will install a new 64-core fibre-optic cable to meet future needs, alongside the existing 96-core fibre-optic cable. In addition, a completely new power supply system will be deployed at various points along the line to ensure uninterrupted and reliable operation of the railway automation systems and the newly installed GSM-R equipment. This two-way investment will create a solid foundation for the future operational efficiency and safety of the Medina del Campo – Ourense line.

The Role of Kontron in Railway Technology

Continuously expanding its influence in the railway technology sector by offering efficient, secure and innovative communication systems, Kontron is further consolidating its presence on Spanish railways with this latest project. Both the GSM-R network installation and the telecommunications infrastructure upgrade projects are co-financed by the European Union, clearly underlining their strategic importance for regional development. This shows the critical importance of the project not only at national but also at European level.

Safer and Higher Quality Railway Services

As a result, Kontron’s strategic move to install the GSM-R network on the Medina del Campo – Ourense railway line in Spain and to upgrade Adif’s telecommunications infrastructure will significantly improve the overall quality and operational safety of rail services in Spain. This investment in digitalization will provide a safer and more comfortable travel experience for passengers, while also enabling more efficient freight transport. These projects, implemented with the support of the European Union, will prepare Spain’s rail network for the challenges of the future, while also making a significant contribution to regional economic development. Thanks to Kontron’s expertise in this field and Adif’s visionary approach, Spain’s railways are making firm strides towards modernization.
