Rome Expands Tram Fleet for €450 Million

The Italian capital, Rome, has taken a significant step towards modernizing its public transport system by signing a €450 million contract with Spanish rolling stock manufacturer CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles). Under this agreement, CAF will supply Rome with 121 two-way, state-of-the-art trams. This investment aims to strengthen the city’s transport infrastructure and provide passengers with a more comfortable and safe travel experience.

Tender Process and Competitor Company's Objection

The framework tender was won by Spanish manufacturer CAF in the fall of 2023. However, according to local media, the other bidder, Japanese giant Hitachi Rail, has appealed this decision in court. This legal process has delayed Rome’s new trams for a while. Fortunately, last week, the court rejected Hitachi Rail’s appeal and the legal obstacles to this major investment have finally been removed. This decision is considered a critical turning point for Rome to achieve its goals of modern public transport.

Delay in Deliveries and Reasons

Initially, the first trams were scheduled to be delivered to Rome in September 2025. However, according to statements made by CAF, this date has been postponed to June 2026. The main reason for this delay was stated as disruptions in the global supply chain, independent of the legal processes related to the tender. In particular, difficulties in procuring some critical components used in the production of trams have negatively affected the production and therefore the delivery schedule. CAF officials emphasize that despite this delay, they are working hard to fulfill their commitments as soon as possible and completely.

Advantages of New Trams for Rome

The 121 bidirectional trams to be supplied by CAF will significantly modernise Rome’s transport infrastructure. These new generation trams will be equipped with the latest technologies to maximise passenger comfort and safety. Larger interiors, comfortable seating arrangements, modern air conditioning systems and fully accessible features for disabled passengers will significantly improve the travel experience. In addition, advanced safety systems will ensure passengers travel safely. With the implementation of this project, it is expected that there will be a significant increase in the quality of public transport services in the Italian capital.

Future Expectations

The €450 million contract signed with CAF represents a strategic investment that will provide Rome with a modern transport solution that will serve the city effectively for many years to come. Despite the delays, the ultimate goal remains the same: to provide Rome’s residents and visitors with a reliable, comfortable and environmentally friendly public transport system. With the legal process between CAF and Hitachi Rail now over, the company is now focusing all its energy on fully fulfilling the terms of the contract. Rome is waiting for its new trams, which will help modernize its infrastructure and make travelling around the city more comfortable and safe. This investment is considered an important step towards meeting Rome’s future transport needs and making the city more livable.
