Ireland is adding to its transport infrastructure with another major upgrade. Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has announced the exact route of the long-awaited new Luas Cork tram line, which will connect Ballincollig and Cork city centres.
The modern tram line project, which will be 18 kilometers in length in total, will consist of 25 stops placed at strategic points along the route. Thanks to this new line, a direct and comfortable transportation opportunity will be provided to Mahon, one of the important districts of Cork.
From Ballincollig to City Centre in 35 Minutes
Once the project is complete, travel times from Ballincollig to Cork city centre are expected to be reduced to around 35 minutes. The tram’s journey time to Mahon will be increased by an additional 20 minutes, bringing the total to around 55 minutes. In order to minimise waiting times during rush hour, trams will initially operate at six-minute intervals, with plans to shorten these intervals further if passenger traffic increases.
Accessibility and Sustainability at the Forefront
The new Luas Cork project includes the use of fully accessible trams, in line with modern transport standards, suitable for people with reduced mobility. The entire line is designed to provide seamless access for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Additionally, cycle paths will be built along the route to promote sustainable transport, and a modern car park with capacity for around 1000 vehicles will be built near Ballincollig.
A Critical Part of Cork's Public Transport Strategy
The Luas Cork project is a vital part of the city’s comprehensive public transport development strategy. Cork’s population is expected to increase by 20% to 50% over the next 60 years. This significant population growth requires significant improvements to the existing transport infrastructure. The new tram line is planned to meet this need and make urban transport more sustainable and efficient.
Integration with BusConnects Cork
The project also has a close link with the BusConnects Cork programme, which aims to significantly improve bus services in and around Cork. This integration will allow residents and visitors to easily switch between different public transport options, improving the overall efficiency of the transport network.
Contribution to Climate Neutrality Goal
Ireland is actively pursuing efforts to achieve climate neutrality in the fight against climate change. Cork, along with Dublin, is among the 2030 European Union cities aiming to achieve climate neutrality by 100. The new electric tramway project will make a significant contribution to the city’s goals of reducing carbon emissions and creating a more sustainable transport system.
