India to Buy 26 Rafale M Fighter Jets from France

In a step that will significantly enhance the power of its naval forces, India has signed a deal with France for the procurement of 26 Rafale M (Marine) fighter jets worth approximately $7,5 billion. This significant agreement was signed in New Delhi with the participation of Dassault Aviation Chairman and CEO Éric Trappier, following the completion of negotiations in March last year.

This deal comes as a result of the selection made in July 2023, which announced that the Indian Navy would be the first country outside France to operate the Rafale M aircraft. The procurement “confirms the Indian authorities’ satisfaction with the aircraft’s capabilities and their desire to expand its operational range,” the manufacturer, Dassault Aviation, said in a press release.

Details of the Agreement and Its Contribution to the Indian Navy

According to a statement by the Indian Ministry of Defense, the $7,5 billion deal covers not only the supply of aircraft but also training, simulators, related equipment, weapon systems and performance-based logistics support. Under the agreement, India will have 22 single-pilot and 4 dual-pilot Rafale fighter jets.

With this new acquisition, the Indian Navy aims to modernize its Russian-made MiG-300K and MiG-303KUB fighter jets, currently used by the INAS 29 “White Tigers” and INAS 29 “Black Panthers” squadrons, with the Rafale M. The Rafale M is planned to be deployed on India’s existing aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. According to some sources, the Rafale M may require modifications to its wingtips to fit into the small-sized elevators of INS Vikrant.

Strategic Importance and Delivery Schedule

The Rafale Ms, which will join the Naval Forces in addition to the 36 Rafale fighter jets currently in the Indian Air Force inventory, are expected to play an active role in consolidating India's regional and global role as a major international player.

According to reports by Naval News, the first Rafale M fighter jet is expected to be delivered to India in 2028-29 and all deliveries are expected to be completed by 2030. It is also stated that the first India-specific Rafale M will be displayed within 18 months. The agreement also includes technology transfer for the integration of India’s indigenously produced Astra Mk1 air-to-air missiles into the Rafale M.

France Emphasizes Confidence

Making a statement regarding the development, French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu said, “We thank our Indian partners for their trust in the excellence of the French defense industry.” On the other hand, Dassault Aviation emphasized that the Rafale M will provide advanced capabilities to the Indian Armed Forces and that the Indian Navy will benefit from the experience of the French Navy, which already operates this aircraft.

Features and Advantages of Rafale M

The Dassault Rafale M stands out as a multi-role fighter aircraft. It can successfully perform both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. It is equipped with advanced radar systems, electronic warfare capabilities and a wide range of weapons. The naval version, the Rafale M, also stands out with its ability to operate from aircraft carriers. Its compact dimensions, powerful engines and maneuverability provide a significant advantage in the naval operational environment. In addition, the Rafale M is expected to be similar to the Rafale aircraft used in the Indian Air Force and create synergy in logistics and training processes.

The deal is considered an important part of India’s defense modernization efforts. It is seen as a strategic step in strengthening India’s naval capabilities, especially against the growing Chinese presence in the Indian Ocean. It is also expected to provide employment to thousands of people in India and contribute significantly to the domestic defense industry.
