First Modernized Tram Delivered to Gothenburg from Skoda

As part of the programme to improve public transport services in the Swedish city of Gothenburg, Czech Republic-based Škoda Group has delivered the first upgraded tram to undergo modernisation at its Ostrava site. This delivery marks the start of a comprehensive renewal of the existing tram fleet in Gothenburg.

Comprehensive Tram Modernization in Ostrava

As part of the tram modernization efforts, new generation electro-hydraulic brake systems were integrated into the vehicles. In addition, the existing pneumatic (air) door drive system was replaced with more reliable and energy efficient electric systems. Significant improvements were also made to the interior design. New heating, air conditioning and modern lighting systems were installed in the trams to increase passenger comfort and safety. These updates will provide passengers with a more enjoyable and comfortable travel experience.

Tram Fleet Renewal Process Accelerates in Gothenburg

In 2022, a major contract was signed between the Skoda Group and Gothenburg’s public transport operator Västtrafik to modernise the M3 tram fleet. With a total value of €79 million (around $85 million), the existing trams in Gothenburg will be gradually modernised by 2030.

The M31 type trams included in the modernisation programme were originally manufactured by the Swedish company ASEA between 1984 and 1992 and later fitted with low-floor sections between 1998 and 2003. These trams underwent a major overhaul in the 2010s at the Ekova Elektrik factory, with their electronics replaced.

The aim of this modernisation programme is to extend the life of the existing tram fleet in Gothenburg by around 15 years. This will significantly improve the quality of the city’s public transport system and provide passengers with a more reliable and comfortable transport option. With the delivery of the first modernised tram by the Škoda Group, a promising step has been taken for the future of public transport services in Gothenburg.
