CITYLINK 398 Trials Begin in South Wales

Trials have begun with excitement in New Wales for the innovative tram-trains that will form the backbone of the South Wales Metro system. Transport Wales (TfW) is rigorously testing the new three-section CITYLINK series 398 trains, designed to modernise the transport network and make it more accessible. The special tram-trains have the unique ability to operate seamlessly on both urban tram routes and conventional railways. They are also equipped with battery traction technology to provide uninterrupted services in areas where electrification is not yet complete or has not occurred at all.

Comprehensive Infrastructure Modernization Paves the Way for Transportation

These groundbreaking tram-train trials have been made possible by a huge modernisation programme of the region’s transport infrastructure. The massive £1 billion programme includes the electrification of around 12.8km of railway lines connecting the capital, Cardiff, to neighbouring cities. The electrification will not only pave the way for faster and more efficient train services but will also help reduce the region’s carbon footprint by providing a greener transport alternative.

New Warehouse and Control Center Form the Heart of the System

Transport for Wales (TfW) has built a state-of-the-art depot in the Taffs Well area to efficiently service and smoothly manage the operations of its new tram-train fleet. This state-of-the-art depot will house the 36 CITYLINK trains that will operate on the South Wales Metro system in the future. It will also house the control centre for the state-of-the-art SWM system, which will act as the hub for all tram-train operations. This strategic investment aims to maximise the reliability and efficiency of the system.

Regular Services Begin in December 2025: A Revolution in Transportation

One of the most exciting stages of the South Wales Metro project will be the official start of regular tram-train services in December 2025, according to plans. With this historic development, transport accessibility in the region will increase significantly. Both intra-city and inter-city journeys will become more comfortable, faster and more environmentally friendly. Thanks to the battery-powered traction feature, uninterrupted transport will be available even in regions where electrification is not yet complete, which will be a great convenience, especially for citizens living in rural areas. With this innovative tram-train technology, the South Wales Metro system is set to significantly improve the quality of life of the local people by offering them a modern, sustainable and integrated transport solution.
