Larian Studios, which made a big breakthrough in the gaming world with Baldur's Gate 3, announced that it will not develop any downloadable content (DLC) for the current game, a decision that surprised its fans. Studio CEO Swen Vincke explained the main reason behind this decision as focusing on new projects being much more exciting and motivating for the development team. At the same time, the studio stated that there are no plans to develop Baldur's Gate 4.
“Making DLC Was Boring, Lacked Passion”
Swen Vincke candidly admitted in a recent interview that they had considered DLC projects, but realized that this process was not the right path for the studio. “The honest answer is: we tried to get into DLC. We talked about Baldur’s Gate 3, but… there was no passion,” Vincke said, emphasizing that both players and developers need to be happy. According to him, producing content solely for commercial reasons caused a loss of motivation within the team, which could negatively affect the quality of the final product.
Vincke added that after the massive success of Baldur's Gate 3, it was natural to expect DLC, but after some in-depth evaluation within the studio, they abandoned the idea. "At first we said, 'Yes, we'll do DLC,' but then when we stopped and thought about it, we said, 'What are we doing?' Sometimes it's not a bad thing to go down the wrong path and then turn back from it," he said, summing up the thought process behind the decision.
New RPG Projects Are Creating Excitement
It is reported that Larian Studios is currently focusing all of its energy on two new, unannounced RPG projects. Swen Vincke stated that working on these new projects has created a great wave of excitement and creativity within the team. This means a more fulfilling work environment for developers, and potentially more innovative and ambitious productions for future players.
Baldur's Gate 3 Support Ended
On the other hand, it was also stated that Baldur's Gate 3 was not completely ignored. The game was supported by a comprehensive epilogue camp update that enriched the story and various new content. However, after the last major update, Patch 8, Larian Studios clearly stated that they had officially completed this epic adventure and were now directing all their attention to new goals.
In short, Baldur's Gate 3 marks the end of an era marked by tremendous success for Larian Studios. However, this farewell also means the beginning of new and exciting projects that will fuel the studio's creativity and passion. The gaming world is already eagerly awaiting what new things Larian Studios will bring to the RPG genre in the future.
