Amtrak, in partnership with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), has opened a new fishing pier at Eagle Landing State Park in Haddam. The move aims to provide anglers with an alternative access point when the Old Lyme Ferry Landing is closed for construction on the Connecticut River Bridge project, which Amtrak leads.
The Connecticut River Bridge project aims to modernize the infrastructure of the Northeast Corridor by replacing the existing 118-year-old structure with a modern, movable bridge. This significant upgrade will increase the reliability of rail service, minimize delays and significantly improve transportation infrastructure in the region.
Amtrak Prioritizes Community Outreach
To ensure public access to the river is not disrupted during this major infrastructure work, Amtrak constructed a new fishing pier at DEEP-owned Eagle Landing State Park. This investment demonstrates the shared commitment of both organizations to balance transportation improvements with the recreational needs of local residents. Recognizing the importance of local recreational activities, Amtrak is prioritizing investment in alternative opportunities during the bridge construction period.
Construction Process and Future Plans
Construction on the Connecticut River Bridge is scheduled to continue through 2029, with the existing bridge to be demolished once the new bridge is operational. However, Amtrak plans to build a 1.000-foot observation deck and staircase that will be fully accessible to the public once the old bridge is removed. DEEP expects the new facility at Ferry Landing State Park to be operational between 2030 and 2031. These long-term plans demonstrate Amtrak’s vision to add lasting value to the recreational areas in the region.

While access to Ferry Landing is temporarily restricted, the new fishing pier at Eagle Landing State Park allows residents and visitors to continue to enjoy the Connecticut River.
