The Turkish State Railways (TCDD) has achieved another significant success with its environmentally friendly projects and has earned the right to receive the zero waste certificate issued by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. This certificate has become a record of TCDD's environmentally friendly projects and its determined work on waste management.
Zero Waste Management System aims to protect natural resources, reduce waste, increase recycling rates and minimize environmentally damaging practices. TCDD has further strengthened its sustainability efforts with the success it has shown in the effective implementation of this system. The document received is an important step not only in terms of environmental protection but also in terms of providing more efficient waste management on railways.
TCDD has implemented various projects to obtain the document. Establishing energy-saving systems, separating waste at source, increasing recycling rates and prioritizing the use of environmentally friendly materials stood out among these efforts. In addition, waste management processes at railway lines and stations were reorganized with innovative methods.
As part of the zero waste efforts, 386 kilograms of paper and cardboard were recycled, preventing the cutting down of approximately 920 pine trees and preventing 7 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, approximately 69 kilograms of plastic, glass and metal waste were recycled, resulting in energy savings of 250 million kilowatt-hours.
While TCDD emphasizes the importance of environmentally friendly transportation systems more and more each passing day, it continues its efforts to expand railway transportation and develop sustainable transportation solutions. Obtaining the zero waste certificate once again demonstrated TCDD's determination to adopt environmentally sensitive practices and achieve sustainable development goals.
