Stadler sent the first Saphir II train to the Aargau Verkehr depot in Switzerland this month. After testing the train, engineers will apply for approval from the Federal Office of Transport. This development marks a significant step forward for the Swiss railway sector.
Saphir II Train Elevates Passenger Experience
Saphir II trains have the capacity to carry 253 passengers per journey. The design includes 79 fixed seats and 6 foldable seats for maximum flexibility. In addition, the train interior includes ample storage space for wheelchairs, baby strollers, bicycles and heavy luggage. Air conditioning systems and digital passenger information screens have also been installed for comfortable journeys.
Saphir II Train Distribution and Features
In 2022, Aargau Verkehr ordered five advanced trains from Stadler for $41,5 million. These trains will go into operation on the 32,2 km Wynental – Surental line this autumn. Operators will combine both models into dual-unit systems, enabling higher capacity and throughput.
Increased Efficiency and Sustainability
Stadler’s Saphir II trains are improving Switzerland’s regional rail network and increasing efficiency. Aargau Verkehr aims to deliver higher reliability and comfort with these new trains. The modern design makes journeys smoother, while offering sustainable travel and easy access.
Testing Process and Future Plans
Following approval of the train by the Federal Office of Transport, Aargau Verkehr will replace the existing old trains with new ones and the integration process will be carried out smoothly. Testing is ongoing and the train is expected to meet safety and performance standards.
Passenger Experience Improvements
Passengers will experience faster and more comfortable travel later this year. Saphir II’s design provides comfortable travel in both summer and winter, with special storage areas and air-conditioned cabins, especially for cyclists and families.
Contribution to the Investment of Aargau Verkehr
The $41,5 million deal underscores Aargau Verkehr’s commitment to improving regional infrastructure and connectivity. Stadler is ensuring the project is completed on time for a fall launch. These developments are seen as a harbinger of a new era in Swiss rail travel.
