PKP Intercity Builds New Rail Depot in Warsaw

PKP Intercity, one of Poland’s leading railway operators, has signed an agreement with the consortium of TRAKCJA SA and DB Projekt Sp. z oo to build a modern depot on the Warsaw-Grochów railway line. The total cost of the project is over $47 million and is a major investment that PKP Intercity aims to complete by 2027. The facility aims to support the operator’s rapidly growing fleet more efficiently.

Modern Warehouse to be Equipped with Innovative Features

The new depot will offer many innovative features to support PKP Intercity’s expanding fleet. Engineers will design the depot by improving train traffic control systems and installing a rolling stock diagnostics station to optimize maintenance processes. These innovations will provide greater efficiency and reliability.

Another striking feature of the new facility’s design is that it will feature three electric rails for employees and state-of-the-art inspection platforms. In addition, the warehouse, which has an operational area of 5.500 square meters, will be equipped with overhead cranes. The 10-ton crane will speed up wheel changes, increasing service efficiency.

New Step for PKP Intercity's Growing Fleet

PKP Intercity is actively renewing its locomotive fleet to meet growing transportation needs. Last year, 63 Griffin multi-system electric locomotives were purchased from Newag. In addition, a contract for 2023 additional locomotives was signed with Newag in 46. As of 2024, PKP Intercity will be in service with over 400 locomotives.

Investment Strengthens Polish Railway Infrastructure

The new depot is an important step in PKP Intercity’s aim to prepare its railway infrastructure for future growth. By ensuring the fleet constantly delivers top performance and optimizing maintenance processes, this investment will increase the efficiency of Polish railways and strengthen travel safety.

This development contributes to Poland’s goal of promoting economic growth and sustainable transport options in the railway sector. PKP Intercity continues to consolidate its leadership in European rail transport.
