Wild Gum Trees Turn into 'Ankara Pistachios' in Ankara

Ankara Metropolitan Municipality continues to implement projects that will encourage producers in the capital to produce.

The Rural Services Department has launched a new project to convert wild gum trees into pistachios. Within the scope of the project, which will be a new source of income for Ankara producers, a preliminary information meeting was held for farmers in Beypazarı and Güdül districts and practical training was given on how to prune and graft trees.

In the project financed by ABB, theoretical and practical training on grafting, pruning and maintenance is provided by district municipalities.

“OUR AIM IS TO PRESERVE THE PISTACHIO TREES THAT LEFT FROM OUR ANCESTORS”

Mayor Mehmet Doğanay, who attended the training held in Güdül, said, “We started the project together with Ankara Metropolitan Municipality to support pistachio producers in our region and increase pistachio production. We will start pruning approximately 1000 pistachio trees. We will also graft them in June or July depending on the weather conditions. Our aim is to protect the pistachio trees inherited from our ancestors and to turn our gum trees into high value-added products through pistachio grafting.”
