Near East University continues to present a special collection that sheds light on history to art lovers and history enthusiasts on the 110th anniversary of the Çanakkale Victory. The “Çanakkale Naval Battles Ship Collection”, which is open to visitors at the Near East University Grand Library, brings the historical warships that wrote epics in the Çanakkale Strait to the present day with realistic models.
The collection, which displays scale models of many historical ships from armored cruisers to destroyers, minelayers to transport boats that took part in the Gallipoli Naval Battles that changed the course of history, takes visitors on a journey through time. The collection, which displays Turkish, British and French ships that took part in the war, is unique in its scope.
The collection exhibited at the Near East University Grand Library reveals the strategic moves of the Gallipoli War on the sea front, the critical moments that changed the course of the war, and the heroic stories. Reflecting the “Impassable” spirit of the Gallipoli Victory, the exhibition aims to convey an important cultural heritage to both history enthusiasts and the younger generations.
Travel Back in Time!
You can travel back in time with realistic 26/1 scale models of 100 ships in the collection, from the Nusret Mine Ship to the Queen Elizabeth, from Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's yacht Savarona to the Bandırma Steamer, which started the War of National Independence by landing in Samsun, as well as life-size sea mines and torpedoes, and works depicting scenes from the war.
The dimensions of the ship models in the collection vary between 1 and 1,5 meters. The exhibition also includes the most advanced warships of the period, such as the Suffren, Inflexible, Irresistible, Goliath, Lord Nelson, HMS Triumph, Charlemagne, Elizabeth, Bouvet, and Ocean, which were British and French ships that attempted to pass the Dardanelles.
After visiting this unique collection, you can also visit the Cyprus Museum of Modern Art and the Cyprus Car Museum located on the Near East University Campus to see many unique works of art and artifacts from classic cars to ship models, from sword collections to glassware collections.
