Women's struggles in the field of health in Türkiye, the country's first female doctor After graduating from the American Girls' College, Safiye Ali went to Germany during World War I, despite financial difficulties, because the Darülfünun Medical Faculty did not accept female students, and studied at the University of Würzburg Medical Faculty with a scholarship. During her time in Germany, she learned German quickly and started attending classes.

While the Bavarian Ministry of National Education made it difficult for Safiye Ali to graduate from the American College, they gave her the title of “doctor candidate” in return for the first place she received in the exam. She earned her diploma in 1921 with her thesis on “internal pachymeningitis bleeding in infants” and became a figure who worked tirelessly against obstacles and played a leading role in women entering the health sector. Today, thousands of women who followed the path she paved graduate from medical schools and form the backbone of the health system.
