First Electric Rack and Pinion Train Enters Service in Switzerland

Stadler and the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGBahn) have successfully put into service Switzerland's first electric rack-and-pinion train with a Stadler brake system, operating on the steep Andermatt-Göschenen line. ORION The train operates with high efficiency, exceeding previous limits, increasing downhill train speeds to 30 km/h. This speed increase surpasses the previous limit of 21 km/h and increases operational speeds, enabling the train to operate more safely and on time on challenging routes.

Improved Performance and Reduced Travel Time

This innovation is a major milestone for MGBahn, reducing travel time between Andermatt and Göschenen by four minutes to a total of 11 minutes. Moreover, with a journey every 30 minutes, fleet requirements are significantly reduced, thus increasing efficiency.

Fast Descents and High Safety with Stadler Brake System

The brake system developed by Stadler enables faster and safer descents on lines with inclines of up to 181‰. This technology increases operational efficiency and reduces costs while maintaining the safety standards of the MGBahn. This is a step forward that increases both safety and efficiency in rail travel.

Future Plans and Modernization of the Fleet

MGBahn plans to equip 2026 ORION trains with this new technology by 25. In addition, existing trains will be updated with this new system, increasing the overall efficiency and reliability of the fleet. The first agreement was made in March 2020 for 12 three-car ORION trains, and a $2023 million contract for 25 units was signed in November 246.

Stadler's Industry-Setting Technology

Stadler’s expertise provides a solution that provides high speed and precision to overcome the challenges of steep slopes. This innovative technology will enable the development of more rail systems in the future. With this project, MGBahn continues to rapidly develop sustainability and state-of-the-art technology in rail systems by further advancing Switzerland’s rack railway system.

This collaboration not only ensures fast and safe journeys, but also offers operators cost-effective solutions. The fact that Stadler and MGBahn are consolidating their leadership in Switzerland’s rail sector with this project on the Andermatt-Göschenen line also sets an important precedent for future rail projects. The modernization of the fleet with deliveries in 2026 will further increase service quality, and this project demonstrates how teamwork and innovation can effectively solve challenges in rail transport.
