Poland has added another important step to its defense industry by publishing a video of the first successful test firing of the CGR-080 missile from the Homar-K multiple rocket launcher (MLR) system. This development shows that the Polish army is increasing its competence in using modern missile systems.
CGR-080 Missile and Homar-K MLRA System
The Homar-K MLRA is a Polish version of the South Korean-made K239 Chunmoo system. Poland has developed a model that can integrate modern rocket artillery systems with its own industrial infrastructure as a result of its collaboration with South Korea-based Hanwha Aerospace.
The successful launch of the CGR-080 missile demonstrates that Poland is increasing its ability to use advanced missile systems and that joint projects with South Korea in the field of defense are bearing fruit. Although the announcement of this test was made on December 7, 2024, it is of great importance as a concrete example of the development of the Polish army's long-range strike capabilities.
Poland's Ballistic Missile Tests
In addition to the CGR-080 missile, Poland continues to strengthen its defenses with longer-range and more powerful missiles. According to information shared by X user Mason, a delegation from the Polish Ministry of Defense shared a video of the successful firing of the CTM-2024 ballistic missile from the Homar-K MLRA system during its visit to South Korea in April 290. In addition to the CTM-290, Poland aims to add long-range missile systems such as the CTM-MR and KTSSM-II to its inventory in the future.
Procurement Process of Homar-K MLRA Systems
Under the framework agreement signed between Poland and South Korea on October 19, 2022, Poland ordered a total of 288 Homar-K MLRS and 23.000 ammunition. Later, in April 2024, an additional agreement was signed for the supply of 72 more Homar-K systems, worth approximately $1.6 billion. Under this agreement, thousands of missiles with ranges of 80 km and 290 km will also be delivered to the Polish army.
The last deliveries took place in November 2024, and Polish Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Bejda announced on his X account that 8 Homar-K MMRVs, 12 K9 self-propelled howitzers and 9 K2 Black Panther main battle tanks had arrived in the country. Thus, the total number of Homar-K MMRVs in Poland's inventory increased to 62.
Poland's Regional Security Strategy
Poland has significantly increased its defense spending to strengthen its regional security strategy after the Russia-Ukraine war. Its cooperation with South Korea is not limited to the supply of military equipment, but also contributes to the development of Poland's defense industry. The addition of long-range missiles and modern MLRA systems to the inventory increases Poland's deterrence power as a NATO member.
Poland’s successful test-firing of the CGR-080 missile marked a significant milestone in the country’s military modernization process. Poland will continue to advance its path to strengthening regional security by further integrating systems such as the Homar-K.
