Indian Railways proudly unveiled the EF-9K locomotive, which is set to revolutionise freight transport. Manufactured by Siemens Mobility at its Dahod plant in Gujarat, this massive locomotive has a power of 9.000 horsepower and is on its way to becoming a pioneer in the rapidly developing railway transport.
Beginning of the Great Order
This launch marks the beginning of a major order of 11 locomotives from Indian Railways with Siemens Mobility over 1.200 years. The new locomotives will be used to perform faster and more efficient operations, especially in freight transport. Siemens Mobility will contribute to India’s transportation goals with the advanced technologies and manufacturing processes of these locomotives.
Strong Performance and Efficiency
EF-9K locomotives can safely pull 4.500-ton trains at a speed of 120 km/h. These locomotives, which effectively serve in the Western and Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridors, are equipped with advanced regenerative braking and real-time monitoring features. These features increase both the sustainability and reliability of the locomotives, while also providing energy efficiency.
Localization and Manufacturing Power
The localization rate of EF-9K locomotives manufactured at the Dahod plant has reached 89%. Siemens Mobility has been successfully maintaining these locomotives for 35 years and is continuously training its personnel. This process stands out as an important step towards strengthening the local manufacturing capacity of Indian Railways and increasing operational sustainability.
India's Electrification Targets
The introduction of the EF-9K locomotive comes in line with Indian Railways’ efforts to rapidly expand its electrified railway infrastructure. India aims to achieve 31% electrification by March 2025, 100. Over the last five years, electrified railway sections have been rapidly increased from 50% to 95%, a process that is crucial as part of India’s vision to transform its railway infrastructure.
The Future of Freight Transportation
The EF-9K locomotives have great potential to enhance Indian Railways’ freight network while ensuring long-term efficiency and sustainability. Siemens Mobility’s expertise ensures that the locomotives meet modern transport needs with high precision. The facility in Dahod fully supports this strategic transformation.
A New Era of Freight Transportation Begins
The introduction of EF-9K locomotives demonstrates Indian Railways’ commitment to establishing a freight transport network of global standards. This innovation will fuel rapid growth and increased efficiency in India’s rail sector, while environment-friendly technologies will provide a sustainable foundation for future operations. With EF-9K locomotives, India will set a strong example for global rail transport.
