Germany to Sell Aging ICE 3M High-Speed Trains

Germany’s leading railway operator Deutsche Bahn has taken a significant step in its high-speed train fleet by launching the sale of ICE 3M trains. This sale is a major development affecting rail transport in Germany and Europe. Deutsche Bahn currently lists 14 ICE 3M trains, but is keeping the asking price for the Class 406 models secret. The sale is of great importance as part of the modernization process of the company’s fleet.

ICE 3M Sales and Modernization Process

Deutsche Bahn aims to replace its aging ICE 2024M trains with newer models by 3. To this end, advanced Class 3 trains called ICE 408neo are being used to modernize the existing fleet. The ICE 3neo trains will make their first run on the Berlin-Amsterdam line in December. This line was originally planned to be equipped with Talgo’s ICE L trains, but due to production delays, Deutsche Bahn turned to a local supplier and opted for ICE 3neo trains.

ICE 3M Technology and Design

ICE 3M trains are high-speed trains adapted for multiple systems, known as Class 406. Developed jointly by Bombardier and Siemens, these trains were designed for cross-border travel and are engineered to reach speeds of up to 320 km/h. 1997 units were delivered to Germany and the surrounding area between 2001 and 17. Inspired by the successful design of ICE 3M, Siemens developed the Velaro family, which was transformed into the Velaro Russian model, known in Russia as “Sapsan”.

Transition to the New Fleet

Deutsche Bahn plans to continue using ICE 3M trains on domestic routes as of 2024. However, due to the wear of their electrical systems, the older trains will be shifted from international to domestic travel. The introduction of ICE 3neo trains will provide faster and more efficient journeys. This transition aims to provide Deutsche Bahn passengers with increased comfort and safety.

Advantages of New Trains

In adopting the ICE 3neo, Deutsche Bahn is actively phasing out older trains from its fleet, aiming to improve service quality. The new generation of trains is expected to offer faster journeys and reduce maintenance costs across the system. This will provide passengers with a more efficient and comfortable experience.

Sustainable Transport in Europe

Deutsche Bahn’s renovations contribute to the goal of environmentally friendly transport not only within Germany but also throughout Europe. By modernizing the trains in its fleet, the company is also contributing to the goal of environmental sustainability by offering faster, more efficient and less energy-consuming systems. At the same time, this move reinforces Deutsche Bahn’s leadership in rail transport and pioneers the development of future railway systems.

The launch of Deutsche Bahn’s ICE 3M trains is an important development not only for Germany, but for the whole of Europe. This step shapes the future of rail transport and contributes to the spread of sustainable transport solutions. With the introduction of the new generation ICE 3neo trains, Deutsche Bahn aims to offer a faster, more efficient and more environmentally friendly rail network. This change promises a better rail experience for both passengers and the environment.
