The Lithuanian military is searching for four US soldiers who have been missing for two days. Their last known movement was near the Belarusian border and the US military says the vehicle they were travelling in has been found underwater.
NATO said last night that four US soldiers were still being sought in Lithuania after NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said they had died. The search for them has been ongoing for two days.
The soldiers were last seen on Tuesday afternoon near the Belarusian border where they were conducting military exercises. The US military said the armoured vehicle they were travelling in was found underwater.
The Lithuanian military said an extensive search was still ongoing and their deaths could not be confirmed at this time.
Rutte said yesterday that he had received information about the deaths of the four soldiers. A NATO spokesman said last night that the comments were based on unconfirmed media reports and apologised for the misunderstanding. The fate of the soldiers was unknown and the search was still ongoing.
