Early diagnosis plays an important role in the treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis (Lumbar spinal stenosis), which is caused by the narrowing of the cavities in the spine and negatively affects the quality of life.
Private Health Hospital Brain and Nerve Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Serkan Zengin said that lumbar canal stenosis manifests itself with pain in the waist and legs due to reasons such as walking long distances or standing.
Giving information about the disease, Op. Dr. Rich said, “Lumbar spinal stenosis disease, the loss of fluid amount of the discs as age progresses, decreases the support support to the vertebrae, and can cause canal narrowing as a result of the pressure exerted on the canals through which the spinal cord and nerves pass. Another reason is the enlargement of the joints in the structure of the spine, resulting in narrowing in the canal through which the spinal cord and nerves pass. Not every patient will show signs and symptoms, and in advanced lumbar canal stenosis, low back and back pain, pain in the legs, numbness and cramps may very rarely cause intestinal and bladder disorders.
NON-SURGICAL SOLUTIONS ARE BENEFICIAL IN THE EARLY STAGE
Noting that treatment yields more successful results in early diagnosis, Op. Dr. Serkan Zengin said, “Similar symptoms such as back pain or leg pain numbness may occur with long-distance walking or standing. In this case, the patient can get temporary relief by sitting, bending or squatting. The diagnosis of lumbar canal stenosis can be made by the doctor's medical history, physical examination and radiological imaging methods such as X-ray tomography or MRI. The chance of recovery of the disease is quite high with medication and follow-up methods in treatment. Medical and physical therapy methods provide successful results in almost 80 percent of the patients. Here, early diagnosis significantly increases the success of treatment. In the early stage, muscle pain, back, neck and spine diseases can be treated to a large extent without the need for surgical intervention. Treatments such as radiofrequency ablation and pinpoint nucleoplasty, together with medication and physical therapy, also provide benefits in the early period and are quite effective in the patient's recovery without surgery. In patients with advanced stenosis and severe pain, surgical treatment can be applied when there is no response to 3-6 months of medical treatment.”
SURGERY TREATMENT METHOD
Providing information about the operation, Op. Dr. Serkan Zengin said, “In surgical treatment, an operation is planned according to the person’s disease level. During the operation, tomography is taken and our control mechanism is completed in the operating room. With this high technology and experienced hands, the risk of complications can be reduced to a level close to zero. If there is compression and bone narrowing at different levels, the growing bone tissue is reduced, the spinal canal diameter is expanded to reduce the pressure on the compressed nerves and the spine is fixed with platinum. The platinums fuse with the bone within 6 weeks after the operation. Thus, the spine can continue its carrier process. After the operation, the patient is usually discharged within 2 days. After the operation, the patient needs to protect himself from movements that strain the waist, heavy lifting and impacts.”
