Canadian authorities have suspended the provision of incentive rebates for purchasing Tesla electric cars under the national program, Canadian television channel CTV reported, citing a statement from the country's transport minister.
“Payments for Tesla vehicles under Canada’s electric vehicle rebate program have been frozen pending a government investigation into their validity,” the channel reported.
Canada's Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland said the criteria for future incentive programs for zero-emission vehicles will be changed so that Tesla vehicles will not be eligible for the rebates until the U.S. lifts tariffs on Canada, CTV reported.
It was noted that the decision to freeze Tesla discounts in Canada was made earlier this month, but officials decided to share it with the public against the backdrop of the upcoming parliamentary elections.
