Balochistan Train Services Resume After Terror Attack

Pakistan Railways authorities expect to resume train services in Balochistan by the end of next week. Engineers are repairing the damaged rails following last week’s terror attack and the work is expected to be completed within three days. Once this process is completed, rail transport in Balochistan will be operational again.

Jaffar Express Attack and Infrastructure Damages

Last week, a terrorist attack on the Jaffar Express train severely damaged Pakistan Railways infrastructure. The attackers derailed three carriages and damaged another carriage with explosives and gunfire. The attack reportedly hit the locomotive and nine carriages, while 600 meters of railway track were destroyed. Following the attack, authorities sent the damaged carriages and the locomotive to Mughalpura workshop in Lahore for repair. The attack caused significant infrastructure losses, and engineers are currently working to quickly restore the line, assessing costs.

Rail Repairs and Restart Plans

Engineers are repairing a 600-metre section of damaged rail to restart the Balochistan train service. The repairs have begun after the derailment stock has been cleared and are expected to be completed in three days. Authorities expect trains to resume operations after these repairs, provided that safety clearances are granted. This safety clearance is critical to minimising risks to passengers and staff.

Flight Cancellations and Alternatives for Passengers

On Saturday, Pakistan Railways cancelled Business Express and Karachi Express services from Lahore. Passengers were diverted to other available trains due to low passenger numbers. Jaffar Express service was also cancelled and passengers can seek refunds from the reservation offices. The ongoing disruptions in service following the attack have exacerbated the transportation problems in the region.

The War on Terrorism and the Government's Response

Federal Minister Hanif Abbasi presented a compensation package of $136.842 to the families of the victims following the attack. He also announced that a comprehensive counter-terrorism operation would be launched to neutralise the terrorists involved in the attack and prevent such incidents. Abbasi criticised the locals helping terrorists in areas such as Balochistan and KP, and vowed that the government would eliminate anyone involved in terrorism across the country. He also alleged that India was financing the attacks through consulates on the Afghan border and said that local facilitators were helping in efforts to destabilise the region.

Regional Recovery and Restart of Rail Services

Pakistan Railways is collaborating with security forces to safely resume regional rail services. The partnership aims to protect infrastructure in the region and ensure passenger safety. Authorities expect trade to increase and regional development to accelerate with the relaunch of the regional rail network.

The resumption of railway services in Balochistan will be a significant step towards the economic and commercial development of the region. However, security clearance remains critical for the resumption of full services. Pakistan Railways aims to complete infrastructure repairs and efficiently reconnect the region. In addition, the government’s commitment to combating terrorism is crucial to preventing similar attacks in the future.
