The Gold Coast light rail extension is a major infrastructure project that the state government has begun to review. This includes the fourth phase of the G:link line, which aims to provide a direct link to the Gold Coast Airport. The Gold Coast City Council is also pressing for an extension to Tweed Heads.
Social Concerns and Rising Controversies
However, the 13km widening project is causing serious concerns among local residents, who say the displacement of 235 homes and the loss of 1.000 parking spaces will cause major community disruption. Deputy Prime Minister Jarrod Bleijie has criticised the previous Labour government for pushing the project through without proper input, and argues that the needs of local people are being ignored.
Strong Community Engagement Promises from Government
Bleijie is promising a comprehensive consultation process to address community concerns during this review process. He says the Department of Infrastructure and Planning will carefully oversee this review. The government is particularly keen to seek community feedback and avoid decisions that upset local people. This process reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring the voice of the southern Gold Coast is heard and not rushing decisions.
Public Opinions and Project Costs
A December 2021 consultation revealed mixed community views on the project. While two-thirds of respondents supported the project, only one-third saw transport links as significantly improved. However, project costs exceeding $7,6 billion have prompted authorities to look for cheaper transport alternatives. In this context, bus lines with 14 stops from Burleigh Heads to Coolangatta have been proposed.
Flexible Solutions and Future Outlook
However, the government’s assessment of bus options, following the federal government’s rejection of requests for additional funding, aims to provide affordable alternatives to meet regional transport needs, allowing for flexible and sustainable shaping of transport solutions in the region.
The ongoing review process provides an opportunity to reassess the viability of the fourth phase of the rail project, balancing community priorities with fiscal challenges and innovative transport ideas. Experts expect these consultations to be a process that accurately reflects residents’ needs and ensures a fair decision. The government’s continued transparency and responsiveness to public feedback will play a key role in building a sustainable and effective transport system that serves the Gold Coast.
