İZELMAN AŞ, one of the companies of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, started to provide occupational health and safety and personal protective equipment trainings to young people who are doing internships in industrial sites through the Vocational Training Center. Following the trainings, 300 pairs of steel-toed occupational health and safety shoes were also delivered to the young people.
As Turkey’s first public Joint Health and Safety Unit (OSGB), İZELMAN OSGB continues its trainings for employees in various risk groups in order to minimize work accidents. In this context, in the first stage, occupational health and safety and personal protective equipment trainings were started to be given to 6 students who were doing their internships in the 100th Industrial Site through the Vocational Training Center. İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Secretary General Prof. Dr. Pınar Okyay, İZELMAN AŞ Deputy General Manager Yılmaz Mede and Deputy General Manager Merve Doğan Gürsel, OSGB Manager Derya Şentürk and 6th Industrial Site President Sami Özdaş came together with the young people. Following the training given by occupational safety expert Muhammed Karabulut, 300 students were presented with steel-toed occupational health and safety shoes. Students who will receive training within the scope of the project will be informed about occupational health and safety and personal protective equipment at certain periods.
“Personal protective equipment is very important”
İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Secretary General Prof. Dr. Pınar Okyay, drew attention to the importance of education in protecting against work accidents and said, “When I was in medical school, we had many patients coming to the emergency room due to work accidents. With the work we are doing today, we are making an important start in this regard. In the trainings, you will be told how to protect yourself from work accidents. The use of personal protective equipment is also very important. We will also have a gift for you to use protective equipment. Our İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay also attaches great importance to these issues. Hopefully, we will be together on better days, under better conditions, and on days without accidents.”

6. Industrial Site President Sami Özdaş said, “An occupational health and safety program was carried out under the leadership of our Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay. Training is being provided for you to work more happily and without accidents.”
Thanks for the steel toe shoes
Mehmet Yaman, who is doing an internship in the field of auto electrical, said, “Occupational safety is important for our health. If something happens to us, our health goes away. Materials can fall on our feet while working. That’s why it’s important to wear steel-toed shoes.” Ceril Kaymaz, one of the interns at the industrial site, said, “Occupational health and safety is important and we need to get training. We need to use protective equipment. Steel-toed shoes are more durable. They protect us when something falls on our feet. We thank you for the shoe gift,” while Ramazan İshak Yıldız commented, “If we don’t have steel-toed shoes, we can get injured when something falls on our feet. That’s why we need to wear these shoes.”
The project will continue
The project was initiated due to the deficiencies in the awareness of personal protective equipment use and occupational safety awareness identified as a result of the social research conducted previously in the 6th Industrial Site. Due to the effect of personal protective equipment use on the prevention of occupational accidents and the injury and death rates in these accidents, occupational safety class shoes, which are harder to reach for young people and children, were given as gifts. The project will continue in vocational high schools and Vocational Training Centers.
