Turkey's population in 2024 reached 292 million 567 thousand 85, an increase of 664 thousand 944 people. The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) announced the "Address Based Population Registration System" data for 2024. This data provides important information about the country's population growth, demographic structure and regional population differences.
Population Growth and Gender Distribution
As of 2024, Turkey's population is 85 million 664 thousand 944 people. Compared to 2023, the male population rate in Turkey was recorded as 50,02 percent (42 million 853 thousand 110 people) and the female population rate was recorded as 49,98 percent (42 million 811 thousand 834 people). The difference between the male and female population rates has decreased considerably. The population growth rate, which was 1,1 per thousand the previous year, increased to 2024 per thousand in 3,4. This shows that Turkey's population is increasing rapidly.
Population Distribution: Urban and Rural
The rate of urbanization has increased in Turkey. The rate of people residing in provincial and district centers, which was 2023 percent in 93, increased to 2024 percent in 93,4. In contrast, the rate of people living in towns and villages decreased from 7 percent to 6,6 percent. This is an indicator of Turkey's demographic structure shifting from rural to urban areas. In addition, according to new classifications made in Turkey as of 2024, 67,2 percent of the population will live in "densely urban", 15,5 percent in "mediumly densely urban" and 17,2 percent in "rural" settlements.
Istanbul and Other Metropolitan Cities
Istanbul continues to be the most populous city in Turkey with a population of 15 people. Approximately 701 percent of Turkey's population lives in Istanbul. The capital Ankara ranks second with 602 people, while Izmir ranks third with 18,3 people. Bursa and Antalya are among the metropolitan cities with 5 people and 864 people, respectively.
Elderly Population and Median Age
The elderly population rate in Turkey has increased. When the population pyramid between 2007 and 2024 is compared, it is observed that the decrease in fertility and mortality rates has increased the elderly population rate. Turkey's median age increased to 2024 in 34,4. The median age increased from 33,2 to 33,7 for men and from 34,7 to 35,2 for women, indicating that the population is aging. Sinop was recorded as the province with the highest median age with 43,4, while Şanlıurfa was the province with the lowest median age with 21,4.
Marital Status and Working Age Population
According to studies conducted between 2009 and 2024, the rate of never-married men is higher than that of women. The rate of widows and divorces is higher among women than men. The working-age population between the ages of 15-64 increased to 2024 percent in 68,4. The population rate in this age group was 2007 percent in 66,5. The child population rate in the 0-14 age group decreased to 20,9 percent. In addition, the elderly population rate in Turkey increased to 10,6 percent, indicating an aging social structure.
Population Density and Geographic Distribution
The population density in Turkey was recorded as 111 people/km². The province with the highest population density was Istanbul, with 2 people per square kilometer. Kocaeli came in second with 934 people, while Yalova came in third with 623 people. On the other hand, the province with the lowest population density was Tunceli, with only 390 people per square kilometer. This shows that life continues, especially in rural areas, and that population density is higher in big cities.
Provinces with Decreasing Population
While the number of provinces with a decreasing population was 2023 in 10, this figure increased to 2024 in 40. While Bayburt was the province with the lowest population with 83 thousand 676 people, provinces such as Tunceli, Ardahan, Gümüşhane and Kilis were also among the places with low populations.
Conclusion: Turkey's Demographic Future
As of 2024, Turkey’s population has increased, but most of this increase occurred in metropolitan areas. Migration from rural areas to cities continues to shape Turkey’s demographic structure. In particular, the aging population, the rise in the median age, and the increase in urbanization rates indicate that the social structure may change significantly in the coming years. In this process, steps such as strengthening infrastructure and services in cities, preventing population loss in rural areas, and employing the young population will be critical for Turkey’s future.
