
Sleet and snowfall have begun to take hold in Istanbul. With the drop in temperatures, IMM has started shelter services for homeless people living on the streets.
Starting this morning in Istanbul, sleet and short-term snowfall began to be effective, especially in the northern districts. According to meteorological forecasts, the precipitation is expected to increase in intensity from noon and continue in the form of heavy snow showers until Friday morning.
AKOM IS ON ALARM STATUS
Due to the expected adverse weather conditions, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Disaster Affairs Department AKOM went into alarm mode as of 07.00:28 in the morning. Coordination efforts are being carried out in AKOM with representatives from XNUMX units, including IMM units, Security, Gendarmerie, Highways, ICA, KMO, İGA and BEDAŞ. Authorities reported that no significant negativity has been experienced so far due to the snowfall.
SALTING AND INTERVENTION EFFORTS CONTINUE
Salting operations were carried out in the northern and high regions of Istanbul since the night hours against snowfall and icing. The amounts of materials used were announced as follows:
IMM Road Maintenance Teams: 65 tons of salt
ICA Teams: 74 tons of salt, 26 tons of solution, 7 tons of urea
KMO Teams: 99 tons of salt, 22 tons of solution Highways Teams: No salt was used
Authorities stated that if the snowfall continues, teams will continue to work in the field.
WINTER SERVICE FOR THE HOMELESS
Against the cold weather conditions, IMM continues its winter services for the homeless. Under the coordination of the Darülaceze Directorate, those in need of shelter are hosted in facilities and contracted hotels. Services such as bathing, shaving, clothing, hot meals, health screening and medication support are provided to the hosted individuals.
The number of people currently hosted: 462 people in total, 76 men and 538 women.
Total number of guests hosted since November 11, 2024: 1.871
In addition, support is provided for returning homeless citizens to their families or sending them back to their hometowns.
FOOD SUPPORT FOR STREET ANIMALS
Due to cold weather conditions, efforts are ongoing to feed stray animals that have no owners. IMM Veterinary Services Directorate teams distribute 520 tons of nutritious dry food daily at 2 points per week for stray animals that have difficulty finding food in remote parts of Istanbul.
