Russian telecoms giant Rostelecom said its Baltic Sea submarine cable was damaged by “external influences.” Several telecommunications and power cables have been severed in the Baltic Sea in recent months, with politicians claiming Russia was responsible.
A Rostelecom spokesperson said that some time has passed since the cable was damaged, repairs are ongoing and customers are not expected to experience any disruptions.
The Finnish Coast Guard said yesterday it had observed a Russian ship believed to be repairing a submarine cable in the Kirjala Basin. The damaged section of cable was in Finland's exclusive economic zone, officials said.
Repeated damage to undersea cables in the Baltic Sea prompted NATO countries in January to send ships, aircraft, drones and submarines to monitor and protect sensitive infrastructure on the seabed.
