The Russian government released American teacher Marc Fogel from a Russian prison yesterday. He was flown to the United States yesterday after serving more than three years in prison in Russia.
Fogel's release was achieved through a deal, but the U.S. government statement did not provide details and said the deal reflected positive steps toward ending the war in Ukraine.
Fogel was arrested on drug trafficking charges and sentenced to 2021 years in prison after seventeen grams of cannabis were found in his luggage at a Moscow airport in August 14. His lawyers said Fogel obtained the drug with a prescription in Pennsylvania, USA, where it is legal.
Fogel attended a press conference with US President Donald Trump at the White House last night and expressed his gratitude. Fogel called Trump a hero and said, “I feel like the luckiest man in the world.”
Trump said the deal for Fogel's release was fair and that another American would be released today, but did not say who he was or where he was being held.
