
After a dog attacked three people in the Siverek district of Şanlıurfa, rabies was detected in the animal during the investigations. Following the incident, a quarantine application was initiated in the region.
According to the statement made by Siverek District Governorship, a citizen named EA was attacked by a dog in Sungurlu Neighborhood of the district on January 27, 2025. The same dog also injured children named MEA and MA in Divan Neighborhood, which is approximately two kilometers away from Sungurlu Neighborhood.
The injured received the necessary medical attention, including rabies vaccination and tetanus at Siverek State Hospital. EA was later transferred to Dicle University Hospital Plastic Surgery Department for treatment and was discharged on February 6, 2025. The children's general health was reported to be good.
On the day of the incident, the District Agriculture Directorate teams went to the scene and found the dog that carried out the attack dead. The sample taken from the dog was sent to the Adana Veterinary Control and Research Institute. After the test result came back positive on January 29, 2025, the neighborhoods where the incident took place and its surroundings were quarantined for 6 months.
Siverek Municipality and relevant institutions vaccinated stray and owned cats and dogs in the surrounding neighborhoods, especially in Divan, Bahçe and Takoran neighborhoods, against rabies. The stray animals identified were taken to the animal shelter in Şanlıurfa.
