Pastry Course for the Hearing Impaired from a French Chef in Izmir

Öznur Tugay, wife of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay, also attended the apprentice pastry course opened by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Vocational Factory for the deaf and hearing impaired. Accompanied by Öznur Tugay and French Chef Joelle Cam, the trainees learned the intricacies of pastry making with the help of sign language interpreters.

Izmir Deaf Protection and Development Association, operating in Izmir, Karşıyaka Members of the Association of the Deaf and the Bornova Association of the Silent have started a patisserie apprentice course opened for the deaf and hearing impaired at the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Vocational Factory. Öznur Tugay, wife of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay, and French Chef Joelle Cam also attended the course, which taught all stages of pastry making. Chef Joelle Cam explained the recipes accompanied by Melek Uslular and Özlem Özer, sign language interpreters working at the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality. The trainees first made cookies together, then chocolate muffins. Chef Joelle Cam explained the details of the recipes. At the end of the course, the trainees made red hearts out of sugar paste for Valentine's Day, February 14.

Öznur Tugay, wife of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay, said, “It was very valuable to share this moment with you here. I think the most important thing is to make life easier for each other. That’s why I believe that we can eliminate all our differences by empathizing and trying to understand each other. I want to continue to be with you from now on. I will try to attend this event as much as possible. I will reserve a special place in my program. Love is the key to everything.”

The trainees aim to create jobs in the food sector thanks to the course. The course, in which a total of 21 people, two of whom are men, received training, covers 124 hours of training. The trainees, who will receive a certificate at the end of the course, will be able to open their own businesses or be employed in the sector.
