French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced on February 6, 2025, that the first Mirage 2000 fighter jets had been delivered to Ukraine. In a statement he made on Lecornu's official X account, he said, "The first of these aircraft arrived in Ukraine today." However, no clear information was given on how many were delivered.
Minister Lecornu also stated that Ukrainian pilots have completed their months-long training in France and will now help defend the country in the skies over Ukraine. This step by France is an important part of international cooperation to strengthen Ukraine's air defense.
Mirage 2000-5: Ukraine's New Fighter Jet
French President Emmanuel Macron announced that Mirage 6 fighter jets would be delivered to Ukraine on June 2024, 2000. The first batch of Mirage 2000-5 model aircraft has begun to arrive in Ukraine, with delivery scheduled for January 20, 2025. According to Avions Legendaires, it is envisaged that 3 to 6 aircraft will be delivered to Ukraine as part of the first delivery.
With this development, the aging Soviet-made Su-24 aircraft in Ukraine's air force began to be replaced by modern fighter jets of Western origin. The Mirage 2000-5 stands out with its high maneuverability, advanced radar systems and modern weapons integration.
Modernization and Weapon Capabilities
The Mirage 2000-5 aircraft were modernized by the French Armaments Directorate (DGA) and brought into line with Ukraine’s needs. Designed specifically for interceptor missions, these aircraft were upgraded to carry the SCALP-EG and Storm Shadow cruise missiles in the Ukrainian inventory. This will allow the aircraft to gain long-range precision strike capabilities and launch more effective attacks on enemy targets.
These aircraft are smaller and lighter than the US-made F-16 fighter jets previously delivered to Ukraine. However, they provide a significant advantage to the Ukrainian Air Force thanks to their advanced electronic warfare systems and high maneuverability. Ukrainian pilots have given very positive feedback on the Mirage 2000-5’s agility and operational effectiveness on the battlefield.
Role in Ukraine's Air Defense
The delivered Mirage 2000-5 aircraft are expected to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses. These aircraft are capable of conducting precision strikes, especially on critical military targets. Thanks to their compatibility with long-range cruise missiles, they have gained the ability to increase their operational range and conduct deep strikes into enemy-controlled territory.
The Mirage 2000-5 aircraft provided by France to Ukraine are an indication of the West’s continued military support for Ukraine. This new air force will play an important role in Ukraine’s defense strategy against Russia.
