Switzerland’s rail transport is set to enter a new era with the FLIRT Evo trains. Stadler’s modern electric trains were tested during a special demonstration run in the canton of Valais. These new trains are being delivered to the RegionAlps and are intended to increase the efficiency of public transport.
Contract and Deliveries
In 2022, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), Thurbo and RegionAlps signed a contract with Stadler for the delivery of up to 510 single-deck trains to modernize the railway network. These deliveries will replace the aging DOMINO and NINA models. The first confirmed order includes 24 trains, 286 of which are for RegionAlps, and will cost a total of CHF 2 billion.
Passenger Comfort and Advanced Features of FLIRT Evo
FLIRT Evo trains are designed to provide passengers with greater comfort and convenience. They feature spacious spaces and special areas for bicycles, strollers and luggage. Additionally, advanced air conditioning systems, mobile charging outlets and improved mobile signal reception significantly improve passengers’ travel experience.
RegionAlps aims to improve travel conditions and increase service efficiency by putting these new trains into operation by spring 2026. RegionAlps, a subsidiary of SBB, provides regional transport services in Valais and carries 11,3 million passengers annually.
Introducing FLIRT Evo
The first FLIRT Evo was unveiled at an industry presentation in November 2024. At the event, representatives from SBB, Thurbo and RegionAlps celebrated the start of this new era by showcasing the upgraded fleet.
The FLIRT Evo will modernise rail transport in Switzerland while significantly improving regional travel experiences. With these new trains, transport will become more efficient and comfortable.
