Finnish defense company Patria has acquired Nordic Drones, a leading UAV manufacturer and professional pilot training provider, to further consolidate its strong position in the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) space. Completed in summer 2024, the strategic acquisition supports Finland’s efforts to expand its defense industry and increase export opportunities in the growing UAV market.
A Strong Investment in UAV Technology
By adding Nordic Drones to its portfolio, Patria aims to strengthen its expertise and capabilities in UAV technology. The acquisition allows Patria to introduce three new UAV systems for operational needs in both civil and military domains: Patria SKY, Patria ONE and Patria GEO. Designed for a wide range of applications from security to data collection and mapping, these platforms reflect the company’s innovation in the defense field.
Patria SKY: Long Range UAV for Security and Defense
Patria SKY is a long-range UAV system developed specifically for security agencies and defense applications. Designed in cooperation with experts in the security sector to meet high-level operational requirements, the system has undergone rigorous testing by the Finnish authorities. Optimized for operation in difficult weather conditions, Patria SKY stands out with its durability and reliability.
Patria ONE: Modular and Multi-Purpose UAV
Patria ONE stands out as a modular UAV designed for multi-purpose use. Its adaptable structure allows for various radio systems, motor arms and fiber optic control systems. In addition, Patria ONE is equipped with connection systems for carrying explosive charges and advanced security mechanisms, increasing its field applicability by offering operational flexibility. Thanks to its compact design, it can be carried in a tactical backpack, making it useful in various military operations.
Patria GEO: High Precision Terrain Mapping UAV
Patria GEO is a high-precision UAV system developed specifically for land mapping and reconnaissance. Able to stay in the air for up to 74 minutes and cover more than 100 hectares of land at a time, this platform provides data with a resolution of 42 centimeters ground sampling distance (GSD) at an altitude of 150 meters with its 2 megapixel camera. With these features, Patria GEO provides an ideal solution for detailed topographic analysis and infrastructure monitoring tasks.
Patria’s Role in UAV Strategy
Patria plays a key role in Finland’s national drone strategy. The company aims to leverage domestic technological expertise and innovation to achieve the country’s defence and commercial growth goals. Through the eALLIANCE project, which brings together leading defence and civil sector innovators in Finland, Patria is driving developments in UAV technology. It also contributes to the ACTUS initiative for the development and certification of tactical UAV systems within the framework of the European Defence Fund. These contributions are important steps towards strengthening the European UAV ecosystem.
